LITTER

IS DANGEROUS

AND DEAR

The litter problem reaches a peak over the Christmas holiday period and causes unnecessary discomfort or distress to thousands. It is curious that the season of goodwill brings in its train so much thoughtlessness by a comparative few which can spoil what should be the happiest time of the year. The National Anti-Litter ~ Campaign Council chairman Mr E. C. Marris, makes a preChristmas plea to everyone to be concerned personally about the control of litter. "If each one of us can think of the other fellow and the results of any careless or irresponsible action we might take, then there should be a marked improvement seen around our beaches, rivers, streets and highways," he said. "All litter is offensive and unnecessary," he said. "At this time we are especially concerned about „ broken glass and empty cans rusty metal, broken china and nails. "Clean up your picnic litter and take it home; put bottles and tins back in the car; always carry a litter bag in the car for small items; don't dump rubbish — wait until you find the nearest receptacle and put it in that;

and don't just drop paper and other waste matter where you stand. These are simple rules which make a big difference when everyone carries them out. Make this part and parcel of the message of a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and don't cause anyone unhappiness or distress." The National Anti-Litter Campaign Council has spoken to senior police authorities and have been assured that police in all centres will be keeping a particular eye on offenders and will not hesitate to take suitable action.
