CALL FOR CARE ON THE ROADS
A call for road users to exercise care, courtesy and commonsense on roads during the Christmas — New Year holiday period, was made today by Taupo s senior traffic officer, Mr A. H. Hyde.
Mr Hyde said Legion of Frontiersmen will be used in Taupo s main Tongariro Street at peak times during the holidays to relieve the work load of the traffic officers. Officers of the Ministry of Transport will conduct behaviour studies and will be watching carefully for cara vans and other large vehicles that may impede the general traffic flow. "Past experience has showed us that, in general, the caravanners who visit the Taupo district are sensible and pull over to let other traffic past whenever possible," he said. People double parking their cars in Tongariro Street are liable to severe reprimands said Mr Hyde. "There is plenty of parking available in Story Place and it is only a stone s throw from the shopping area," he said. "Generally, I hope this holiday period will be similar to last year. It was busy, but there were not many incidents," said Mr Hyde.
