Take care choosing your Christmas tree
Families obtaining their own Christmas trees or vendors of live or cut trees should be careful not to infringe legal restrictions on the movement of pines, larch, and Douglas fir. The precautions are aimed at preventing the spread of a serious fungous disease known as Dothistroma pini. The disease, for which the control regulations had to be invoked about three years ago, attacks pine needles, causing them to turn reddish brown and drop off prematurely. Defoliation hinders growth and in time may kill the tree. Areas where the disease occurs have been declared "infected areas", and neither tree nor branches may be taken from them into areas classified as free of the disease. In the latter category are Auckland City and Northland, the Gisborne district, Wairarapa, Canterbury, and Otago-Southland. Any inquiries about the movement of Christmas trees should be referred to the nearest Conservator of Forests, New Zealand Forest Service.
