COLTS WELL BEATEN

Taupo was soundly beaten on the first innings by Tauranga in an under-23 representative cricket match at Tauranga on Sunday. The home team made good use of a good batting wicket after being invited to use it first, and the openers were not parted until 140 runs were on the board. C. McBride got 43, but the star was 14-year-old R. Cullen, who stroked 16 boundaries in his tally of 91. Tauranga finally declared at 234 for four and Taupo started the chase badly, losing wickets at 0, 16 and 36. A sound knock for 21 by B. Williamson, and a partnership worth 62 between F. Rewa (27) and J. Williamson (33) saw the total through to 98. The Tauranga bowlers broke through again and only a stand realising 54 between M. Carlton and G. Halverson saw Taupo past the follow on mark. Carlton fully justified his selection and his efforts at the tail of the innings saw Taupo to a final total of 172 - 62 short of the target. Scoreboard:
