Lake Hotel in merger
The Lake Hotel, Taupo, is to change hands following the merger of the Campbell and Ehrenfried Co. Ltd and New Zealand Breweries Ltd. Announcing the re-organi-sation, Mr K. B. Myers, chairman of Campbell and Ehrenfried and Sir Clifford Plimmer, chairman of New Zealand Breweries, issued a joint statement on how the two companies planned to pool their similar interests to achieve economies in operating costs, greater profitability and improved service to the public. New Zealand Breweries will acquire ownership of 17 C. and E. hotels as well as part interest in eight others, and several new ventures still in the planning stages. C. and E. will continue to operate three hotels in Auckland and the Geyserland in Rotorua.
A new company is to be set up to handle the two companies' wine and spirit business throughout New Zealand, with the exception of Canterbury. It will be managed by C. and E. and will be equally owned and have a shared board. This integration of activities is expected to strengthen and enlarge the marketing of a large number of overseas and local agencies which until now have been distributed either directly or through subsidiaries of the two companies. C. and E.'s managing director, Mr A. D. Myers, said the merger was to be carried out without loss of any present staff of either firm. The whole arrangement becomes effective on April 1 next year.
