Turangi Fire Brigade Saves Five Houses

TURANGI (OC) The quick action of the Turangi Fire Brigade resulted in a propertythreatening scrub fire being extinguished witliin 45 minutes, at Turangi, on Sunday. Fanned by a southerly wind the fire reached within six feet of five houses in Tongariro Street, Turangi, and began to surround a truck. The fire began at 12.15 p.m. and was under control by 1 p.m. Firemen remained on duty in the area guarding against further outbreaks until 2 p.m. The Turangi brigade under the control of the chief fire officer, Mr L. Dennis, was helped by the Tokaanu and Tongariro Prison Farm brigades in fighting the fire. A spokesman for the brigade said it was believed the fire had been deliberately lit.
