TURANGI AIRSTRIP COULD HAVE PUBLIC LICENCE
TURANGI (OC) The Departinent of Civil Aviation has agreed to the airstrip at Turangi being licensed as a public field, proAided the conditions laid down for such fields are adhered to. At Monday's meeting of the Turangi Liaison Committee, the department said it would issue a public lieence if the facilities required were provided. The land concerned was leased from the Department of Maori Affairs by Turangi Farms Ltd., who were prepared to let the area to the Rotorua Aero Club, the committee was told. A senior engineer on the Tongariro power develop-
rment, Mr J. Bennion, said some cohesion betwTeen the committee and the aero club was required. It would be a pity if the club developed the field as a private one when it would only take a little more expenditure to bring it up to public standard. Mr J. Lempriere reminded the committee that at its last meeting it had decided the field should be a public one, rather than left with only a private licence. Dr H. R. Gibson said there was no difference in standards laid down for private or public fields. On the suggestion of Mr Bennion, the matter is to be left in abeyance until there
is sufficient public. mterest when a public strip could be considered.
