BUSINESSMEN CRITICISE MOVE
BY GOVT.
The Government's decision to restrict the lengths of the hire purchase agreements for motor cars has heen criticised by some Taupo ear dealers. In an announcment yesterday, the Government reduced the repayment period for motor vehicles from 18 months to 12 months. At the same . time it announced higher deposits for rental television, but local agents are varied in their opinions on this move. One prominent television hiring agency thought it dealt rather a severe blow to his business. But he said, it could. possibly reduce the number of people hiring television and increase the actual purchases. Another dealer cHd not eonsider it would have an
effect on his business. A third businessman concerned in television hiring thought it was the "best thing that ever happened." He continued by saying -that the number of people hiring with a minimum deposit might decrease, and he felt this was a good thing. He finished by saying "it's an ill wind that blows nobody some good." The car dealers seemed to stand in unison against the move. One prominent dealer said this restriction may force prospective buyers to have second thoughts, especially when the purchase was a "trade - in." Cars are not regarded as a luxury, he added, hut a necessity; "people may decide against purchasing a more expensive model, or keep the one they have already."
