MOBILE DINER APPLICATION

TURNED DOWN

The second application for the operatioii of a mobile diner by a Taupo resident was declined at a special meeting of the Taupo Borough Council, on Monday night. The- resident, Mr R. R. Lane, wished to operate the diner within the Taupo borough, seven days a week, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. Councillors were unanimous in their decision,

although some thought a business of this type could become a necessity in a time when Taupo hecomes a larger town. There were 13 objections to the application and the majority of these came from people who operate food premises in Taupo. Objections were based on the opinion that the existence of the diner would take trade from established businesses which had high overhead and unfair competition would result. Objectors also stated that there was no necessity in Taupo for a diner as it was possible to get meals at any time between 6.30 a.m. and midnight from Monday to

Thursday, and on Fridays and Saturdays establishments were open to 2 a.m. and later, as warranted. The Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, suggested to Mr Lane at the meeting that he could make efforts to start his business in a vacant premises in the town. Mr Lane replied that he had not seen evidence of vacant premises in the main street where he thought the business should be established. Cr J. M. Stanley opposed the application and said the area that would he taken up by the diner was required for parking. He also supported the objectors in their opinions that the diner would he unfair competition for established eating houses. Cr W. L. Haines said he thought the applicant would cry to "make a go of it" if he were granted a licence, hut Cr Haines thought there was no need for a diner in Taupo at the present time. Cr C. I. Jacoby: If the need for a diner grows in Taupo then we could look at the situation again in the future. Mr Lane was represented in his application by Mr D. Heatley.
