EXPLOSIVES, CARS STOLEN

IN TAUPO

The explosives magazine at J. S. Burrows' quarry, near Rotokawa, was broken into on Saturday night and the Taupo Police are investigating circumstances. Detective-Sergeant D. L. Gray said yesterday morning that the burglary appeared to be associated with the conversion of two cars in Taupo the same evening. One belonging to Mr R. W. Draper, Taupo, was taken from Motutaiko Street

some time after 7.30 p.m. It had apparently been used as a battering ram to force a locked steel and wire mesh gate on the Fletcher's forest road, which gives access to the quarry. The car was found abandoned in a ditch near the magazine. In the back, on the floor was a quantity of detonators. The magazine had been forced open. Some time between 9.15 and 10.40 p.m. a second car, belonged to Mr E. V. Rogers, Aratiatia, was taken from Horomatangi Street and was later found abandoned in Heu Heu Street. Half a stick of gelignite was found in it. Mr Rogers' car was recovered at 4 a.m. yesterday and Mr Draper's car was found in the ditch by quarrymen at 6.30 a.m., yesterday. It is not known what other explosives might have been taken.
