Low Flow In Waikato

Precautions against possible flooding in the lower Waikato River were taken by New Zealand Electricity Department, on Sunday, when the control gates at Taupo were almost closed for about two hours. Assistant control engineer at Whakamaru, Mr K. G. Popel, said the shut-down was made at a time when there was a low power demand on the stations on the river. Before the gates were opened at 3 p.m., many people were seen watching the low flow of water over Huka Falls. At the falls and elsewhere on the river bare rocks and a motley of debris, normally covered by water, was exposed to curious eyes. Mr Popel said the river was at its lowest flow for a considerable period.
