College Unbeaten Soccer
Season
The Taupo-nui-a-Tia College first soccer eleven finished its first season in good form when it beat Te Puke High School, 4 — 2, on Saturday. The team completed the season with an unbeaten record in its inter-school fixtures. Against Te Puke, Taupo opened the scoring in the first minute of the game with a goal by centre-for-ward Paul Gittins. Gittins scored again shortly after to make the score Taupo 2, Te Puke nil. In spite of constant Taupo attacks the score remained at 2 — 0 until just after halftime when Gittins scored his hat-trick. Leading 3: — 0 Taupo hurled everything at
the Te Puke goal but this weakened the Taupo defence and Te Puke scored two shock, runaway goals to make the score Taupo 3, Te Puke 2 with 15 minutes stlil to play. Taupo recovered quickly, however. A goal by Gittins was disallowed because another Taupo player was offside, but then Edwin Wikatene capped an excellent game on the right wing by driving in a hard, angled shot which completely beat the goalie to give Taupo a 4—2 lead. Although Taupo, playing now with fast, accurate passing, kept up pressure on the Te Puke goal, they could not score again and the final whistle blew with Taupo winning 4 — 2. For Taupo, Marius Gabriels, John Duggan and Tom Williams were sound on defence, while Gittins, Wikatene, W. Robertson and A. Radford were prominent in the Taupo attack.
