Mayor Replies To Reader
In reply to a question asked by a corresponclent in the "letters" column of the Taupo Times, the Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, has given an assurance that the council has no plans for the discharge of sewage into the lake. "The counciPs instructions to the consulting engineer were that there should be no discharge into ' Lake Taupo," he said. "I do not think the engineers needed this instruction since it is so obvious. The waters of Taupo Bay, that is from Rangitira Point to Wharewaka Point, are pro-^ tected under section 6 of the Health Act for the purposes of water supply intake. Lake Taupo is classified as "CT under the Waters Pollution Act, 1953. "The Waikato River," Mr Story added, "is classified as "D" down to Wairakei Village, where at the intake to the village water supply, the class changes to "B." "The council has yet to discuss the question of treatment and/or discharge of sewage with the engineers," he said.
