No Precedent For Lake Taupo
Preservation
There is no operative precedent in New Zealand for the scheme of reserve areas proposed by the Taupo County Council, says the Internal Affairs Department in its aimual report. The principles embodied in the scheme might well be found to have relevance in the future to some other lake areas, the report adds. Describing the proposals, the department says the scheme is a major proposal for the establishment of reserves aiong many parts of the shores of Lake Taupo and extending for some distance up the lake's more important tributaries.
"The principal objects of the scheme are the conservation of the natural beauty and fishing and wildlife values of the lake, the preservation of places of historic interest adjacent to it, the protection of public access to the lake shores and the prevention of pollution of the lake and its tributaries."
