Half Million For Turangi Post Office Facilities
The Post Office is to spend over ££ million on development for the Turangi area. This was announced today by Mrs R. M. Stevenson, M.P., on advice from the Postmaster-General. The present automatie exchange is to be extended to its full capac of 700 connections.
A larger automatie exchange with provision for up to 2200 subseribers will later be provided. Tenders for the new exchange building will be called about October and the exchange should be in service about the end of 1967, added Mrs Stevenson. Additional toll outlets to neighbouring centres are to be provided progressively. A vhf radio toll link between Turangi and Taupo is to be established and this will later be extended by a microwave .system to be in-
stalled between Taupo and Rotorua. Negotiations for the purchase of the necessary land for the repeater and terminal stations are in hand. Local telephone cabling is also to be augmented and extended to cater for expected subseribers. A 2000 sq. ft. temporary post office in the commercial centre should be ready for occupation later this month and sketch plans for a permanent 5000 sq. ft, building are also being developed. The permanent building is designed to be the focal point of the commercial centre and construction should begin early in 1966. Housing for key Post Office personnel and aceommodation for single officers is also being provided, concluded Mrs Stevenson.
