OFFENCES
Fines totalling £60 were imposed by Mr G. J. Donne, S.M., in the Taupo Magistrate's Court this . week against three men convicted on charges of fishing with a spear and of fishing in a closed season. The men are Dexter Hallett, 25, William Lawrence
Kereama, 50, and Taylor Waiari 18. All are Turangi workmen. Prosecuting for the Internal Affairs Department, Mr D. Main said the men were seen in a tributary of the Waimarino River, a spawning stream, and were subsequently caught red handed with 41 fish, a four-pronged spear and an iron bar. Rangers N. B. Ewing and L. V. Thompson gave evidence of having seen lights flashing in the stream. Kereama came out with a spear and,. shortly afterwards, Waiari and Hallett with two sacks of fish — 41 in all. They had been speared. Mr Thompson said he asked the men where they got the fish and they admitted having all taken part in spearing them in the stream.
