Senior Citizens' Meeting
Twenty-six senior citizens were present at a social meeting, held in the Taupo Memorial Hall, on Tuesday. The meeting was convened by Mrs J. Dillon who asked Mr Claude AVatson to address those present. Mr Watson said the day of residence in the locality of birth, . surrounded by children and grandchildren, had gone, and socially speaking, elderly citizens were left to their own resources to live out their autumns. He was sure all present wished to live interesting and as active lives as possible. He thanked everyone for their attendance and felt sure that there would have fbeen more present with milder weather and some organisation of transport. The main objective was to give elderly citizens an opportunity of meeting each I other and not living as strangers in a strange town. He felt quite sure that this move by elderly citizens would receive sympathetic help and encouragement from the community as a whole and particularly from service organisations.
"Transport would be a problem, but members should try to reach their objectives by their own means," Mr Watson said. "Several activities suggested themselves such as cards, bowls, outings and talks upon features on New Zealand history," he said. Finally he thanked the Taupo Borough Council for free use of the hall. On being put to the meeting it was decided unanimously to form an Elderly Citizens' Association and to meet every second Tuesday; the next meeting to be held at 2 p.m. on August 17 in the Memorial Hall. Mrs J. Dillon was appointed interim convenor.
