House Fire Started In Oil Burner
Prompt warning and timely acti,on by the Taupo Fire Brigade on Sunday saved a house property at 22 Taniwha Street from destruction by fire. The occupant, Mr J. Gibson, was away from the house and a stepson, Mr K. Bing, discovered the fire. When the brigade arrived about 2.30 p.m., fire was spreading through the flooring under the*house. Carpets in the hall and bedroom were partly damaged and the wallpaper was damaged by smoke. The chief fire officer, Mr S. K. Christensen, said the fire appeared to have originated from a below-floor level oil heater. Considerable damage occurred to the flooring and joists in the hall. When Mr Bing opened the door into the house, the flames burst through the floor. Firemen crawled under the house in breathing apparatus to deal with the fire which was contained in about 20 minutes.
