HOME AWAY FROM HOME FOR WOMEN BOWLERS

The Taupo Ladies' Bowling Club expect to open their mvn bowling green on October 16, a week before Labour Day weekend. The green is situated between the Municipal library and the Taupo Bowling Club and will have eight playing rinks. It was visited recently by a turf censultant from Palmerston North who declared it to be carrying a good sole of grass, brown top and fescue. The opening of the green will bring to fruition a project for which club members have been wo.rking for a considerable time. It has cost about £1130, and a shed which has been oonverted into a pavilion cost £120. Members raised money by organising raffles, street stalls, card aftemoong and the sale of clean newspapers to Taupo butchers. The president • of. the club, Mrs D. F. Rough-

sedge, said yesterday that the club was very grateful to the butchers who, in buying the paper, had made a substantial contribution to establishing the green. Members collected newspapers from Taupo homes, sorted them for cleanliness, smoothed them out and rolled them for sale to the butchers. The land is part of the Taupo Domain and was made available to the club on lease at a noininal rental by the Taupo Bo rough Council in its capacity as the Taupo Domain Board. The site was cleared levelled and sown by Mr R. G. Maisev, Taupo, and since the strike of grass, it has been looked after by Mr H. Mann, Taupo, as honorary greenkeeper. The present membership of the club is about 40. Mrs Roughsedge said that it is hoped to increase this membership now that the club has its own green because working women and girls will now be able to play in the weekends. In the past the club has had the use of the Taupo Bowling Club's greens on Tuesdays and Thursdays and could play at the weekends only on special occasions. On their own green they will be able to play all the week, There is a sizeable lounge in the pavilion, carpeted wall to wall, a kitchenette and a 1-ocker room.
