GYMNASIUM FOR TAUPO COLLEGE NEXT STEP

A physical education expert will shortly visit the Taupo-nui-a-Tia College with the latest approved plans for a college gymnasium, the principal, Mr F. N. Tritt, told the College Board of Governors on Tuesday. At a £2 to £1 subsidy, the college would need to raise between £4000 and £5000 toward its cost. Mr Tritt explained that he had mentioned the gymnasium requirement to the College Parents' Association as they might wish to take over the fund raising organisation. The provision of a gymnasium was a matter which should be given serious thought. The assembly hall was used constantly for physical education with consequent wear and tear, and was not entirely serving the purpose for which it was designed. The two uses did not really mix and money the association could raise, would qualify for a subsidy. It was something the parents might wish to work toward, he said. A gymnasium would have a high degree of usage. JFollowing Mr Tritt's report on careers days, when fourth form students spent two days with potential employers getting first hand experience of jobs they might be interested in taking up, the chairman, Mr C. S. Currie, said the business community had spoken very highly of the scheme and the interest shown by the students. "The business community was very thrilled to have the opportunity of having the

students come to us," he said. It was an excellent way of getting into the college with what the future held, and gave employers the opportunity of getting to know the type of applicant who would later be seeking employment. "I should like to say how much the business community appreciated it," Mr Currie said. The district manager of the New Zealand Railways Road Services, Rotorua, wrote enclosing forms to be completed for Turangi pupils' concession tickets to attend the college. The board was advised -that nine pupils would probably require transport. The board decided to support in principle the Tokoroa High School's protest against proposed increases in rentals of teachers' residences and will notify the regional supervisor of the Department of Education accordingly. An application by the Terraces Archery Club, Taupo, to hold the Bay of Plenty archery shoot on the college grounds on a Sunday in October was granted by the board.
