Hunter Tries For Cunning
Sika Deer
TURANGI. (OC) Mr Joff Thomson, author of two books wellknown to hunters, "Deer Hunter" and "Deer-Shoot-ing Days", / recently arrived in Turangi to try his hahd at sh/)oting the cunning Sika deer. Mr Thomson has shot many types of deer and has been hunting them commercially in the South Island for the past 16 years. However, he wishes to add to his experience and has come on this "busman's holiday" to Turangi. He considers the Sika to be a real challenge to the true sportsman. Up to date, he has managed to down two Of some 20 he has sighted.
All except these two were well out of range and, with all his experience, Mr Thomson could not get close enough to this crafty species to try his luck. Although Sika deer are fairly common in this area, they have never been liberated in the South Island. Joff has spent much of his life in hunting, but he still thinks it worthwhile to travel from his usual haunts in the South Island and match his wits against the Sika.
