To Support Scheme?

Two Labour Members of Parliament, Messrs B. P. MacDonell (Dunedin Central) and P. A. Amos (Manurewa) were told on Tuesday night of the Taupo County CounciBs reserve scheme and asked to support it when it came before Parliament. The chairman of the Taupo branch of the Labour Party, Mr C. J. N. Newbold, told the two MP's that Taupo was proud of its lake and that the county council had introduced a timely scheme for watershed protection. Mr Newbold was speaking at a meeting in the Memorial Hall, Taupo. Mr Amos told the meeting he had watched the development of the pumicelands since he had spent three years at Tihoi as a teacher at the time the first farms were established in the area. There was great potential in the pumice area but he was not sure the present agriculture policy was doing much to alleviate the problems which were arisirig. Later Mr Amos criticised the Lands and Survey Department's policy of clearing the land of all trees. He said erosion was creating tremendous problems in the Taupo country and that trees should be planted right along the edges of the lake.
