ONLY CLOSED BY WEATHER ONCE
Although South Paciflc Airlines of New Zealand have overflown Taupo on two occasions since the airport opened, on only one occasion has the field been closed due to bad weather. This was iast Thursday when heavy rain and low cloud made a landing impossible. But on Sunday the aircraft had to miss Taupo out because there was not sufficient light left to allow the aircraft to land at Taupo and get off again in official civil twilight. On Sunday, because of bad weather over Southland, the northbound Spanz flight had to miss out Gore. Passengers from there were taken overland to Invercargill and the flight was delayed. Coming north, the aircraft could not make up the lost time and the stop at Taupo had to be omitted. Some improvements to the landings at Taupo were expected in the near future, the operations manager of Spanz, Mr A. Caldwell, Auckland, said yesterday. He said the NZBC would rsoon be providing a carrier beam from Station 1ZA Taupo. While this would not improve "twilight" landings, pilots approaching the airport in bad weather would receive navigational aids. Later the Civil Aviation Department would be installing a beacon at Taupo.
