FARMERS
Sir, — All farmers should have done well over the past three years with good wool and meat prices prevailing. To compar-e recently settled farmers with the original 15 settlers is not a true comparison as we have gained from their misfortune by: — • The use of selenium for stock health and higher lambing percentages. • Higher world prices for meat and wool. The original settlers were not so fortunate because selenium deficiency was not discovered for some years after settlement and meat and wool prices were at a low ebb. So with less lambs to sell and at lower prices they were in a serious position. The position was reversed when we were settled three years ago good lambing percentages and good prices so naturally we have done well and are pleased with our farms. Taupo has a great future as far as farming is concerned and I feel that crying the land down is just the easy way out when times are not so good. — Yours, etc.,
D. J.
