TOURISM
Sir,— It was recently my pleasure to be preseht at the Travel and Holiday Associations annual convention. This conference, held in Auckland, attracted over 400 delegates from 44 points in New Zealand. During the deliberations, much was said about the expanding tourist trade of this country and also how little the "man in the street" seemed to realise what it meant to him. An essay competition in the Students Digest, sponsored by the N.Z. Tourist and Hotel Association, on "How Best Can The Public Assist New Zealand's Tourist Industry?" had been won by a young fellow, Laurie C. Williams. His remarks apply as much to we Taupo people as to the rest of New Zealand. "The best way to boost the tourist industry is to give the country an appealing 'image' in as many ways as possible. "The private citizen's part in this campaign is threefold — he should be proud of his country, well informed about it, effici-
ent and friendly in his dealings with tourists. If the natives are friendly, the tourists will tell their neighbours" 'back home.' " This refers, of course to overseas visitors, but applies equally to our dealings with that great army of Kiwis who come here year after year and supply our bread and butter. — Yours, etc.,
W. J.
