SPECIAL RATE STRUCK FOR MANGAKINO TOWNSHIP

A special differential rate of 2.55d. in the £ on the capital value has been struck by the Taupo County Council for Mangakino. In addition, there will be three fees for main serviees — water, drainage and refuse — which will bring the rate demand for an average £800 property to £20/2/-.

TrOtal income for Mang- ; akino is expected to be | £12,278, made up of £8479 from rates and £3799 from Crown subsidies. The council has found it necessary to strike a differential rate because of the low valuations placed on the Mangakino properties by the Valuation Department. This is the first year the council has struck a rate for Mangakino and it feels it will have more information before it when next year's estimates are being made. A major item of expenditure will be the county town's share of administration costs — £4840. This figure was found by taking the proportion of Mangakino values, population and number of assessments, compared to the total cost of administration last year, and averaging them out. The fees for the main serviees are, generally, a reduction on the charges levled by Ministry of Works when it administered the town. The refuse collection fee has dropped from £5/4/- to £3/5/- per house and ' the water supply fee from £5 14/- to £5. It was found necessary to increase the : drainage and sanitation fee! from £2/16/- per toilet to a maximum of £3/7/- with; a sliding scale of • fees ; where more than one unit is being charged for.

Cost of running the refuse collection is estimated at £2480, the water supply at £3185 and drainage at £1900. The civic buildings aecount contains an item of £1380 for repairs and maintenance. Provision is made in the cinema accounts to charge 40 per cent. of the administrative sal a r i e s (£616) to this amenity.
