Otorohanga County Will Not Cede Ranginui To Taupo Otorohanga County Council is not in favour

of ceding the Ranginui district in the south-east-ern part of the county to Taupo County. "We have contributed over £7000 to the servicing of this area and I do not think we should let it go," the chairman, Mr J. L. Wallis, said at the meeting of the council recently. The council decided to write to the Local Government Commission on these lines.

Mr Wallis tsaid the ques- ] tion had been fully diseussed with the then i Commijssioner of Taupo County, Mr O'Keefe, some years ago. The opinion had heen expressed then that council : would be no longer interested in the Kihikihi-Mang-akino route via Waipapa Dam i'f it did not require the access to service the Ranginui area. "At that time it was considered best for everyone that the Ranginui area should be left as part of Otorohanga County," said Mr Wallis. The council had before it a letter frorn the Local Government Commission stating that it had recently been investigating a proposal to alter the boundary between Taupo and Rotorua Counties. The Taupo County Council had applied for a review of all its boundaries. In its. application, Taupo County Gouncil said that in view of the extensive development within the county, mainly through Crown operations, it was necessary to have a sound and stahle hasis /on which to plan for the future. To achieve this, it felt that its boundaries must be stabilised for a reasonable

period so that rating revenue could be depended upon for some years. PrfOssible Transfer The council considered that there were good reasons for the Local Government Commission to investigate the possible transfer to Taupo County of areas west of its present boundaries. The Commission said that as a result of this application, it had resolved that it would initiate a review of the functions of the district of the Taupo County Council. Ten counties and Taupo County Council have common boundaries with Taupo County. Before undertaking the review, the Commission said it would like comment and suggestions , from each of the local authorities affeoted.
