HEAVIEST FALL FOR YEARS AT

TURANGI

TURANGI. (OC) Friday saw one of the heaviest snowfalls in Turangi for some seven years. Shortly before lunch all work on the Tongariro Power seheme was brought to a halt as the snow fell thickly on the township of Turangi. The Desert Road was closed shortly afterwards, as much by accidents as by the snowfall.. An Army truck and a beer tanker invblved in a fatal collision blocked the road and pr-e.vented the return to Turangi of MoW teams who had been working south of Turangi in the Desert Road area. The National Park Road was closed to traffic and travellers on their way to the Chateau were forced to return. The road from Turangi to Taumarunui was open to traffic until late in the afternoon but was closed in the early evening. The Waihi Hill, five miles west of Turangi, has been

undergoing major transformation by the MoW. All work was stopped at this vital link between Turangi and Taumarunui as the weather closed in.
