Big Increase In Number of Rugby Players
Turangi
(OC)
The growth of Turangi as a hydro town will mean a sharp increase in the number of sehoolboy Rugby players in the area, and the junior advisory board established last year is already preparing for an enlarged competition next season. The junior board was established through the efforts of the headmaster of the Turangi school, Mr T. Grave. Teams were fielded by Printed and published by Taupo Time*, Ltd.» proprietors of the Taupo Time*. at its registered office, Heu Heu Street, Taupo. TUESDAY, JULY 6, 1965.
the four schools in the area — Tauranga-Taupo, Turangi, Waihi Convent, and Kuratau. This year, The J.A.B. has stopped catering for teams from the various schools, and now grades the teams according to weight. At the moment about 100 boys are placed in two grades, 6st. and under and over 6st. The numbers are growing each week and when necessary gradings will be reconsidered. Each boy is placed in a team under the continual guidance of a selected coach. Emphasis is given to instruction and continuity — encouraging team
spirit. Last year £75 was spent on jerseys, which is standing the scheme in good stead this year. The Tongariro Rugby sub-Union supports sehoolboy football, and is expected to provide some finance this year. It is then hoped that matches can be arranged with Taumarunui and Taihape sehoolboy football teams. This year the J.A.B. decid- | ed to cater for basketball as well as Rugby. The eommittee, while meeting together and raising finance to cover both Rugby and basketball, is now divided into two subcommittees.
