EXPERIMENTS WITH TROUT
The homing instincts of trout are being tested by Department of Internal Affairs through the releasing of two lots of 50,000 fingerlings into Waihi Bay, Lake Taupo. The department is seeking to establish definite proof that trout possess an instinct similar to that of salmon.
Several indications of this have been seen in the past, according to Mr J. K. Murphy, manager of the trout hatchery at Turangi. "All the fingerlings have been tagged, with different markings for those released in the Tokaanu Stream and for those in the Tongariro River," he said. In two years' time when, as adults, the trout would work up th-e rivers to spawn, results were expected to show that the fish could find their way to the right stream. Mr Murphy said the experiment was coupled with another being made at the hatchery. It consisted of a series of tests with electrical machines for use in diverting or repelling fish. A special riverside chamber was being built for these tests, which were to begin next year. If the tests prove suecessful, electronics w7ould be used to prot.ect trout from the- hazards of power projects in the area.
