Taupo Airport Facilities Already Proving Valuable
Spanz will deliver 100,000 pine tree seedlings to Taupo from a tree nursery in Nelson over the next month. The seedlings will be used by Fletcher Timber Co. Ltd. to replace trees hurnt in the 1946 fire in the Tauhara Forest area. Some of the seedlings will also be used to plant sections of the forest affected by logging operations. Arriving in 500 lb. lots, j the seedlings will be transported straight to
the site of planting where a team of workmen will place tjiem in the ground. The seedlings are packed in special plastic bags which avoids the necessity of having the roots surrounded by weight-con-suming soil. The forest manager, Mr P. V. Wastney, said after a consignment arrived on Wednesday, that if it had not been for the existance of the airport the planting project, for which 300,000 seedlings are required, could have been retarded for a year. He said that due to North Island nurseries being nnable to supply the total numher of seedlings it was essential that the amount be quickly made up from the Nelson nursery. Mr Wastney commented that he thought the speedy service offered by the new airport was rapidly coming to the notice of other firms in the town.
