First College Soccer Team Beat Tokoroa On Saturday
In the inter-school games between Taupo-nui-a-Tia College and Tokoroa on Saturday, Tokoroa won all the Rugby matches, while Taupo was superior at hockey, particularly in the boys' games.
Taupo fielded a soccer team for the first time and beat Tokoroa High School's XI by three goals to two. The game started in a spectacular way, but after five minutes Tokoroa made a break down the right wing. A centering kick was headed into his own goal by a Taupo defender.
After 20 minutes Taupo equalised with the best goal of the game. Bob Max from the inside-right position drove in a hard, angled drive from 15 yards out. Taupo put the ball into the net again shortly after but this goal was disallowed. At half-time the score was 1 — -1. For Taupo captain Tom WiUlams, at centre half, and Rob Max, at inside right, were the best players. The whole forward line functioned well, and [ backs Bill Robertson, Mar- j
ius Gabriels and John Duggan provided a solid defence. With an ' inevitable improvement in general fitness and teamwork, the college eleven should develop into a formidable combination. Shortly after half-time Tokoroa, in a dazzling movement, scored their second goal to make the score: Tokoroa 2, Taupo 1. For the rest of the game Taupo kept the ball in the Tokoroa half, making repeated attacks on the Tokoroa goal.
A shot by A1 an Radford was disallowed as he was offside. Then Radford, from the right wing, scored to equalise at two goals each. Taupo forced four corners in as many minutes and their perseverance was rewarded when Paul Gittins at centre forward drove a hard shot into the bottom left hand corner to make the final score: Taupo 3, Tokoroa 2.
