HAWKER SIDDELEY 748 MAY BE NEW AIRCRAFT USED ON TAUPO AIRPORT
South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand are at | present negotiating with the New Zealand Govj ernment for the purchase of two Hawker Sidde- | ley aircraft to replace the DC3's at present in use. | If the Government approves of the proposition put to them by Spanz these aircraft could be in i operation within 18 months.
The Hawker-Siddeley 748 family of aircraft is powerj ed by the Rolls Royce Dart, j the propeller-turbine en- | gine with more than 25 mil- | lion flying hours of comparatively trouble-free ruriining to its credit — flying > hours in every latitude, | every variation of climate and meteorological conditions.
The version that Spanz hopes to purchase will be able to seat 52 passengers. !The designers did not spare any luxury when the interior was designed and offer passengers a journey with comfort, convenience and pleasure.
The fuselage of the 748 gives maximum scope for it is not interrupted by any overhead wing spar, having s p e c i a 1 centre-section frames of structural bulkheads and is of constant height and diameter all the way from -the crew compartment to a few inches forward of the rear daor.
The pressurised cabin is fully air conditioned and individual air louvres are fitted for each passenger. Automatic temperature control is available; in warm climates cold air systems are fitted. The 748 will accommodate up to 52 j passengers and their baggage with ample room for freight and has a maximum range of 1400 nautical miles. This is the model Spanz is interested in.
The aircraft is designed to cruise at ,300 nautical m.p.h. at 17,000ft. However, the ceiling height is 25,000ft. It can also cruise at oniy 5000ft. — about the same as the DC3's at present.
This great latitude of height assures passengers of a pleasant flight, no matter what the conditions. It will also enable Spanz to maintain their present policy of bringmg various scenic attractions to the attention of their passengers.
Since entering airline service in early 1962, Hawker Siddeley 748's have accumulated more than 75,000 flying hours and flown over 500,000,000 passenger miles.
