TAUPO HOCKEY TEAM BEATEN

Taupo men's hockey team played well but lost 2 — 5 to a strong representative side from Rotorua at Kaimanawa Reserve, on Sunday. Rotorua scored three early goals from well-constructed movements and had a lead of 4 — 0 in the first 25 minutes. At this stage it seemed likely that Rotorua would reach double figures. However, Taupo rallied and centre-forward Ian Strange scored a neat goal for the home side before Rotorua netted again to make the half-time scor-e 1 — 5. The second half was hard fought, but Rotorua were unable to add to their taily in the faee of some desperate Taupo defence. Fullback Ted Mercer came from nowhere to save spectacularly after Des Morgan the goalkeeper had been beaten by a screamer, while Morgan himself produced some brilliant saves. The Taupo half line, although tiring, held the Rotorua forwards and were able to send left wing Mike Tritt away to beat the opposition and increase the Taupo score to two. Messrs M. Roach from Rotorua and K. Moates of Taupo umpired.
