POST PRIMARY RATINGS FOR TOKAANU SCHOOL
People with families oi school age who would be moving to Turangi could be assured that first class facilities for the education of their children would be provided, Mrs Rona Stevenson told a meeting of 60 people on Monday. Government had approved in principle the establishment of a Form 1 to VI high school at Turangi she said. This was announced by the Minister of Education, Mr Kinsella. "The scheme will involve substantial alterations and additions to the present buildings," the Minister said. "The original proposal
was to translate the district 'high school to postprimary status taking pupils from Form III, but following representations from the school committee, the South Auckland Education Board made a strong case for establishing a Form I to 6 school and this has been accepted by Government," continued Mr Kinsella.
"This is another step towards the provision of first class educational facilities in this rapidly developing town. The South Auckland Education Board will open a new 10 roomed primary school complete with dental clinic and full administrative facilities in July and primary pupils now attending the district high school will transfer to the new primary school. The board also plans to open a second new 10-room*-ed primary school at the beginning of the second term next year and as these schools will cater for pupils up to Standard 4 only there will be no need for a third primary school as originally envisaged," said the Minister.
"The particular needs of Turangi as far as housing of teachers is concerned has been recognis1 ed by Government and i authority has been given to the setting aside of a number of three bedroomed houses for married teachers. : These houses are being constructed by the Housing division and all will be completed within a few wreeks. The housing of single teachers has not been overlooked. Tenders close in a few days for a six single bed roomed hostel with dining room and lounge and further hostels are being planned by the South Auckland Education Board," concluded Mr Kinsella. "These are the Governments intentions and it will be my job to see them carried out," Mrs Stevenson> said.
