GOVERNMENT MAY RESUME WORK ON MARAETAI TWO
Ministry of Works j sources have eonfirmed that a start on Maraetai II is likely to he made about. April uext year. Speculation is rife on the subject at Mangakino town-' ship about the scheme and people in the town are waiting for some definite word from the Government concerning resumption of the project. Resumption next April would pennit a fairly steady works programme and would require only a limited increase in town facilities and aceommodation. Many of the houses left when the project was halted in late 1961 have now been sold or taken up by permanent residents. The houses left pnovide an indication that an early start will he niade on the project.
[ The Ministry of Works has directed all occupants of departmental houses in j i the town to remove creepers I and shrubs from around itheir homes in readiness for painting. The directive said inter- | ior decorating would be done at the same time. Residents see thits as proof that the town is heing made ready for another hydro construction "hoom". They say that if last year's report of the Power Planning Committee is to be implemented, an early start is necessary on Maraetai II. » Some residents in Mangakino are looking even further ahead, to the possible duplication of existing stations on the Waikato j River.
