Seminar To "Educate" New

Councillors

Arrangements were proceeding for the holdmg of a South Auckland local body seminar soon after the local body elections in October. Cr J. T. Kneebone (Hinuera Riding) said at the monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council. "The seminar will be held at Matamata soon after the elections while the new councillors are still enthusiastic about being councillors. The purpose is to educate these councillors in local body matters," Cr Kneebone said. A local body clerk, an engineer, a solicitor and an experienced councillor would give addresses, and then these four would form a panel for an open forum.

Representatives of cities, boroughs, counties and ad ■ hoc bodies would be invited , to the seminar. The idea of the seminar 1 had originated with two ■ flrst-term Matamata Bor- ' ough Council members and himself, Cr Kneebone said. "We have been acutely conscious of our lack of ^ knowledge of local body ! affairs, and feel that a lot of time wasted at meetings by new members asking questions could be saved by 1 the holding of the seminar." Cr H. J. Spear (Tokoroa 1 Riding) : What is the seminar in aid of? Cr Kneebone : Educating local body councillors in local . government. Cr Spear: Send them to Tokoroa and they will get educated.
