Changing Of Basis Of Rating May Eventuate

The question of a poll ( for a change of the ratiug system for Taupo county may be raised in a circular to ratepayers in the near future. A decision to obtain further information on the subject from Rotorua was made at Tuesdays meeting of the council. A report on the matter will be made to the next meeting by the county clerk, Mr C. J. Coates. Among comments from councillors at the Tuesday meeting, Cr J. M. Black recommended that council support a change of the rating system and follow the course taken by Rotorua. Cr R. D. Tremaine said it would be wrong for the council to recommend any particular type of rating at the present time. Cr ET. R. MacDonald: We as a council should not vote one way or the other. To every farmer in the area, though. unimproved rating

is the answer. Forty per cent of the county ratepayers would be absentee voters but the council should, if possible, circularise all of them.
