Report On Thermal Activity
Taupo 15 or o ugli Couiicil is at present investigatlng a report made by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research on the potential of geothermal areas inside the Taupo horough. According to the Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, the "warm" areas within the horough include the new industrial block hetween Crown Road and Rotokawa Road. The horough has had disenssions with the DSIR and with Ministry of Works on a report prepared hy the geophysics division, DSIR, says Mr Story. The ohject of these talks was to enstire that future development can safely take place and that it does liot prejudice the use of existing development in adjacent areas. Mr Story denied a rumour that people owning property in the areas concerned were to be relocated and paid compensation. "That is just wishful thinking on the part of someone," he added. There was a possihility that Taupo could henefit considerahly from the use of geothermal steam and water and this aspect of the report was being looked into. A decision on the future use of the land was vital, said Mr Story. This had been l)ointed out to the departments concerned and any fresh developments would he made piiblic as soon as they were known.
