First Turangi Houses To Be Occupied Next Week Says MoW

The first family to occupy oue of the lieAV Ministry of Works houses at Turangi will take up resideuce next Monday. The family, which includes three children, is that of Mr W. S. Englebritsen, who has been with MoW for five years at Atiamuri. Three houses will be oc- f cupied on Monday and Tuesday, and allocations of the rest of the first 100 houses. will be made as soon as they become available over the next few weeks. Arrangements are also being made to beautify the new town. Reporting on this aspect Mr Rona Stevenson, MP, said if trees, shrubs, lawns and gardens give grace and dignity in towns and cities then Turangi would be well endowed. The Ministry of Works will give every encouragement to householders to make the most of opportunities for creating graceful surroundings. Three fruit trees and three ornamental exotics j will be available for each j. I section, as well as smaller i shrubs where the occupants are prepared to plant and care for them. The department itself | will carry out a very exten- 1 sive planting programme, | and the first few shrubs are already in place in a part of the recreation area between j the community centre and j tbe high school. 1 During the current plant- ! ing season, principally be- | twreen August and Sep- | tember, many ornamental 1 exotics will be planted

along formed roads and streets. It is hoped, as well to establish belts of trees on the perimeters of the industrial areas, partly to screen them and partly for protection from prevailing winds. There will be more planting inside the perimeters, too, where this is possible and appropriate. Planting in the water reserve area is also intended this season, although to some extent the amount accomplished will depend on the availability of suitable contractors. Trees to be planted in the water reserves will be exotics. But along both banks of the Tokaanu Stream, where it passes. through the town, native plants will be used in order to preserve the character of the reserve.
