LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
AMA LGAMA TION Sir, — As a new resident in this glorious part of New Zealand I read> with interest, in your last week's paper that it is proposed to amalgamate the borough and county. . There appears to be two systems of rating — unimproved value (that is on the land value only in the borough) and capital value (land and buildings), in the county. I understand the laws 'of New Zealand state that before a change in the rating system is contemj plated, it is necessary to ihold a poll of ratepavers in the area concerned to give | their approval. Can you inform me on i the following points: — • On amalgamation will i the amounts of rates col- | leetable be subdivided between the Taupo Borough and the * Taupo County
Council areas and the present systems retained? • If the rates collectable are not apportioned between the borough and the county, what system of levying rates is proposed?. — Yours, etc.,
INTERESTED.
Interested: A poll is necessary before the system is changed — not before it is contemplated. No decision has yet been made on rates, but it seems logical that urban and rural areas will retain their rating systems. Surely, money would be spent in the best way to benefit the district? Let's not be parochial over this. — The Editor.
