Probation For False Pretences

Although he might have considered himself smart by "disappearing into the night" owing a Pongaroa grocer £37, there were a lot of people engaged in the detection of crime and enforcement of the law who were a lot smarter, Mr G. J. Donne, S.M., told Trevor Henry Merrin in the Taupo Magistrate's Court yesterday. Merrin, a 37-year-old fencer, now of Mokai, appeared for sentence on a charge of false pretences. He was released on probation ■ under special conditions for a year. While on a job in the Pongaroa district with two other men, Merrin had obtained credit from a grocer on the understanding that the manager of the farm property would pay the account from funds earned. Merrin left the district knowing that the amount had not been paid.
