BRAVE ACTION EARNS BOY SCOUT TWO AWARDS

The brave and courageous action of a pupil of the Tokaanu District High School earned him two awards which were presented to him by the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Fergusson on Friday.

For saving the life of a six-year-old child from drowning at Rangipo, Richard Tyres, was presented with awards from the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand and the Boy Scouts Association by Sir Bernard. The presentations were made in the presence of the headmaster, Mr G. W. Grave, Richard's parents, Mr and Mrs F. Tyres and the staff and children of the school. Richard was 13 years of age when he saved the life of John Peters in Octpber last year. A number of young. children were playing near a rain filled water hole and one of the two was paddling in the water. John Peters fell into the deeper end and was immediately out of his depth. Richard, who was passing by, ran across the paddock where he saw the

boy lying face down in the water. He was able to get the boy out of the water, then, remembering his scout training, he applied mouth - to - mouth resuscitation. The doctor later said that only quick thinking on the part of Richard had averted tragedy. Richard later received congratulations from his headmaster and Constable S. Buhn of the Tokaanu | Police. j Following the reading of | the citation, the Governor General also complimented Richard and commended him for his quick thinking.
