GROWN AT AN AMAZING RATE, SAYS COMMISSION
Taupo borough and county have grown at "an amazing rate" over the last decade, says a decision of the Licensing Control Commission following its annual review held in Tauranga in March. "The commission last reviewed the need for new licences as recently as October, 1963, and then authorised a licence for an hotel of the motel type to accommodate not less than 40 guests," says the decision under the signature of the chairman, Mr S. T. Barnett. "At the same time we refrained from granting a new wholesale licence to - - >
give the utmost encouragement to the construction of a new hotel. "We remain dissatisfied with the wholesale services but the present hotels — and the new one — have the opportunity for a reasonable space of time to show that they are providing a service acceptable alike to the commission and the community. "There are only three hotels now, one of which is in the commercial centre and is comparatively new and two located beyond the inhabited boundaries of the borough. "It is difficult to assess the needs of Taupo for hotel services. In the accommodation aspect, the demand for lodgings is being competed for by a variety of private establishments licensed and uniicensed. "If the new hotel is in fact built, four public retail outlets for liquor is presently sufficient, and it will take some time after the fourth hotel has opened its doors to assess whether the demand for hotel accommodation is being reasonably fulfilled."
