BIBLE WEEK PLANNED FOR
JUNE 20-26
A Bible week, sponsored by the Taupo branch of the British and Foreign Bible. Society, will be held in Taupo on June 20. A series of meetings will be held during the w-eek and will finish with a liouse-to-house collection on June 26. This was decided at the annual meeting of the society, held in Taupo on Thursday. The secretary of the society, Mrs D. Attwood told the meeting there are millions of newly literate people in Asia who are reading any material they can obtain in their quest for knowledge. "Christian literature is surely by far the best they can read, specially in the light of Communist propaganda which is being made available to them," Mrs Attwood said. "These people are our neighbours and many of them, even though they Tove God and his teaching, have nov Bibles at their disposal.
In fact, only one in 80 j Christians in the world have a Bible of their own. "We who are nourished by the Word, who live in a world of plenty, are responsible to these people to see they have the right type of reading material. "The society is doing this work, often by providing Bibles free, and translating the scriptures into the people's own language to encourage them to read them," Mrs Attwood concluded. A film "The Seeing Hands" was shown to the meeting. It illustrated the history of Braille Bible and explained that each volume cost £33 to produce. It showed that the volumes were sold for very little so that they were able to reach 12 million people throughout the world. The following officers were elected at the meeting:— President, Mr M. Mercer; vice-presidents, Revs. I. H. Robertson, G. T. Beilby, N. R. Martin, B. P. Williams; secretary, Mrs D. Attwood; committee, Mesdames B. Kennedy, Thomas, Miss Armstrong, Mr Clout.
