SCHOOL WAGER THAT WAS HONOURED 12 YEARS AFTERWARDS
A portentous document was drawn np 13 years ago by two 17-year-old pupils of the Marlborough Gollege sixth forni, John Hyslop and Gerard Gamble. As a result of experierieing sonie of the end of-the-year feeling, and when two of her pupils began a diseussion on marriage and its evils, the teaclier, jVTiss Margaret .Tellie, joined in with intefesti In the document, drawn tip in her presence, it was agreecl that tlie first of thein to marry should make a donation of £5 to the eollege library. It was witnessed by six otiier members of the class ancl given to Miss Jellie for safe-keeping. Miss Jellie is now teaching at Matamata, Gerard Gamble is still at Blenheim, and the Rev. John Hyslop is a missionary in tlie Xew Mebrldes — a in a r r ied m ission a ry . Bis marriage last year did not escape the notice of Mr Gamble, who wasted no time in reminding him of the agreement. A s'hort wliile ago after 13 years tlie eollege librarian, Mr II. P. Gleiv, learneu for the lirst time of the agreement when Miss Jellie wrote from Matamata enclosing a cliequo from the Rev. John Hyslop.
