EX-CHAMPION GOLFERS SHOW PACES ON TAUPO CLUB'S COURSE THE presence of three ex-New Zealand amateur golf champions at the first annual match between HawkeTs Bay and Waikato on the Taupo club's course last weekend, gave more than usual interest to such a fixture. Singles only were played, and the series was won by Hawke's Bay with 12 games to Waikato 's 111. The three top-flighters were Tim Woon (Waikato), Stuart Jones (Hastings) and Bob Glading (V/aikato).

Jones and Glading played each other on Saturday afternoon, and finished all-square. The next morning Jones and Woon met, and Jones emerged the winner by four and two. Througliout both his matehes, Jones played very steady golf. The inter-provincial match comprised 24 games of singles, and was played in fours. In the first round the players were matched as chosen, and in the second were matched against the other opponents of tlie four. VERY GOOD GOLF Most interest was naturally sliown in the matehes of the top four players — D. Woon and 14. H. Glading, from Waikato, and S. G. Jones and F. Gordon, from Hawke's Bay. On the Saturday afternoon Woon played Gordon. Gordon established an early lead of two lioles against Woon before tlie latter settled down. Woon, liowever, recovered liis losses by tlie ninth hole, then proceeded to consolidate his wim As Woon improved, Gordon losl touch, particularly with liis short game. The match between Glading and Jones produeed very good golf. Glading had the best of the breaks to complete tlie course in 70, two under the standard scratch score. At the ninth lie liearly lioled a putt for an eagle three to hecome one-np. Jones squared Ihe match at the 12th — a 440-yard par four — witli a birdie three, and took tlie next with another birdie to become one-up. The next two lioles were lialved in par figures, and Glading again squared tlie match with a birdie three at the 16tli. On the 540-yard 17tli Glading hit a tree, but finislied on the fairway. Jones hit a long tee sliot and put his second wood six feet from the pin. WOON'S PUTTS OFF Glading was on for three and sank his putt for a birdie four. in par figures. After the games on Saturday, Waikato had a lead of oue game. Other good individual cards were recorded by H. Henderson (Hawke's Bay) 73-3-70 and M. B. Thompson 71-scr.-71. On Sunday morning Woon played Jones, and Glading played Gordon. On the day Jones and Glading were playing the better golf, and won fairly comfortably. Woon's putter was not working well enough for him to take advantage of tlie chances he had. Hawke's Bay liad the better of the second series by two games, and so won tlie fixture by oue game. Good cards in the second series were returned by I. Mclnnes (Waikato) 71-4-67 and P. Peacock (Hawke's Bay) 73-2-71. Mclnnes opened his match with four birdies on the first four lioles. After the match tlie players had luneli at tlie clubhouse. Mr L. II. Clieal, president of the Taupo Golf Club, welcomed the members of both teams and their ofiicials, and said lie lioped the fixture woiild become an annual oue at Taupo. RESULTS OF MATCHES Mr 14. Mackie (Hawke's Bay), Mr Lee Martin (Waikato) and Mr Y. IIollis (Waikato) returned thanks 011 behalf of the teams and tlie associations. Drummond 5 and 4, K. G. Bartlett lost to R. I. Ilarrison 2-up, I. Mclnnes lost to II. A. Henderson 4 and 3, S. Bryant beat M. J. Thornton 2 and 1, L. Hodgson lost to A.
