THOSE TWO TREES IN STORY LANE

Sir, — Taupo has much for which to thank its founders in the provision of a town belt. in close j)roximity to ihe maia street. If developed sensibly, this belt can be made both beautiful and useful without any danger to the public, and it can becoine a joy to all for many generations. Why does the traffic officer wish to remove trees which are eloin g no harm to anyone except possibly a few careless drivers who may be anxious to get away from the .rouncil offices in a hurry? They provide no serious danger to through traffic in Story Tane that cannot be rectified witli a litUe thought. Indeed, a previous council thought so littlc of this road as a tlioroughfare that a plan existed a few years ago to close direct aceess to Ihe river at this point. The area between Ihe. council offices and the sports ground is planned as a civic square, which will necessitate tlie removal of the liedge alongside ihe temporary basketball courts, and there will tlien be ample turning and parking space in the area. These beautiful trees provide we1come shacle in the summer and are a joy to behold in the autumn. I understand that they are 00 years old and could last for many years if they are properly looked after. The help of the beautifying society should be enlisted and a plan formulated to preserve tlie beauty of our future civic square. There appears to be no logieal reason why an area round the civic offices should not be kept beautiful under expert supervision, but preserve us from tlie suggestion that tlie base of the trees should be painted white. The council should welcome tlie opportuiiity of ereating a pleasant atmosphere in tlie yicinity, before carrying ou t the painfui duty of extraction from tlie ratepayers wlien they make their annual visit.
