Crescent Winged Bomber Breaks Sound Barrier
Britain's four-jet crescent-wingecl bomber the 'Victor' which, it was announced recently, has broken through the sound barrier, is probably the largest military aircraft in the world to have achieved supersonic flight. This was asserted by a spokesman of the makers, Handley Page Limited when it was revealed that the supersonic flight took place "quite recently" in normal test conditions. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant J. W. Allan, stated afterwards that he discovered the plane was exceeding speed sound after his attention had been diverted to other matters for a moment. Despite its speed, -the plane was behaving in its customary stable manner. The Victor is in quantity production for the R.A.F. Its unique crescent wing structure enables it to fly very fast, high and far yet to take off and land safely at slow speeds. The firm says the performance will be even better when its later mark is equipped with Conway engines giving it considerably greater power.
