MILESTONE IN HISTORY OF THE TIMES
THE new format of this edition of the Taupo Times representsanother milestone in this newispaper's history. Thanks to the (•oiitinued geuerous support of .advertisers, this issue is larger tiian was at first contemplated. The Times is what the Amerieajis eall a neighbourhood newspaper, dedieated to distriet interests, without any political affiliations or leanings, aiid to give as wide a coverage as possible. Wheii the Times was launehed on Jauuary 16, 1952, its editor, the late Mr C. J. McKinnon, wrote : 4 ' This paper has been launehed iu the belief that with the cooperation of the people of the Taupo countryy the, enterprise will be successful . . . a useful forum for the ventilatioii of opinions and the discussion of questions vital to the publie interest . . . Its simple and sole purpose is to serwe its eommunity with local news ..." The tenor of that is as true today as it was then. Though the makeup has ehanged, and the eirculation has grown. the poliey laid down by the foiuiders in 1952 reniains. Beeause of the eo-operation of the people in this distriet, and the miswerving support from Taupo businessmeli and national undertakings, the Times has progres.sed to the point where shortly its own offiees in Tleu 1 leu Street will be finished and oeeupied, The opening of those premises will enable us to give a more effieient serviee to the publie, to keep step with the ever-growing demands of Taupo and the rapidly developing areas adjaeent to it.
